Planning a pregnancy spa trip? A safe pregnancy and a pregnant spa weekend aren't mutually exclusive, but you need to know what's off-limits - like the sauna and certain types of mud treatment.
Can you feel the heat? Many pregnant women wish to dabble in soothing heat and mud treatments to ease pregnancy aches. When you are pregnant, its important to be cautious about activities that involve elevating your blood temperature, including heat and mud treatments. Activities which cause an increase in your body temperature can cause your heart rate to speed up and can increase the temperature of your blood, both of which can be distressing for your baby. As well, exposure to temperatures over 105 degrees can be damaging to developing cells, like your baby’s , and could harm development or even cause you to miscarry. So it’s not smart to soothe sore muscles by soaking in a hot tub or sitting in a sauna…. and many doctors suggest that you avoid taking a hot mud bath. If you decide to engage in these activities anyway, make sure that the temperature is set below 100 degrees. On the other hand, using a heating pad for sore muscles while you are pregnant is definitely fine. Concentrated heat on one area won’t raise your overall blood temperature, so your baby will be safe. Because every pregnancy is different, you should discuss what’s safe for you with your doctor.
